Kalács that I baked
The Making of Kalács *
Essential ingredients
stirred
kneaded
the dough oozes
through my fingers
slowly forms
into a firm ball
rises as it should
in the lap
of a good, Hungarian woman
placed in the heat
it rises again
a rich, shiny crust
reveals that it is finished
walnut, poppyseed, apricot, cheese, or date
warm, flavorful bread
to bring a smile
to a child's blue eyes.
